Cutting connection costs with Skype
Skype is a great tool for cutting the costs of connecting. The benefits are very tangible when making voice calls to foreign countries. But not all Skype services are priced that low. For example, if I use Skype Access in my country to connect to WiFi hotspots, Skype will charge me €0.16 (VAT included) per minute. A local network operator offers 24 hours of connection time for what translates into €1.60. Yep, you read it right, one euro sixty cents. So I have a choice: pay the same sum for 10 minutes or 24 hours. Not hard to guess which I'll choose if I'm working "on the road", even if I don't use all those 24 hours. In practice, the 24-hour deal allows me to get two days' work done: the afternoon of the first day and the morning of the second day. Lesson learned: if you want to keep your costs down, make comparisons and read the small print.
